Guide: My 10 Best Luxury Hotels in Tokyo

Introduction

Tokyo is THAT city. From stunning skyscrapers towering over ancient temples and palaces to tranquil, zen-like gardens and teahouses, it’s one of those cities that you’ll never get tired of. Countless histories intertwine with the ever-growing technological advancements only found in Japan. Little Boy From Taiwan has always been fascinated as a kid with the hospitality sector of Japan, and as the years rolled by, I wanted to show my special appreciation for Tokyo’s luxury hotel properties.

Tokyo’s hotel scene is as complex and diverse as the city itself - from ryokans to capsule hotels to luxury behemoths, there’s a place of rest for everyone. For this blog post, I wanted to break down the top 10 best luxury hotels in Tokyo, which focuses on a few core principles, such as hotel design, hospitality and memorable experiences. No matter where you are in Tokyo, I hope this guide helps drive the aspirational bookings and visits to Japan in the near future!

Full Disclosure: all of these hotels are not affiliated with Little Boy From Taiwan, and I will not earn any commission if you book via the links below. I simply added the links to help with prospective viewers on checking out the hotels and if they’re interested in staying there!

#10. Bulgari Hotel Tokyo

It’s the very first Bulgari Hotel in Japan, but it’s also one of their finest establishments going forward. Situated in front of Tokyo Station, this homage to Italian & Japanese art is one of a kind, and one of the most posh hotels out there.

This is the most recent addition of luxury in the vast city of Tokyo, and is also one of the priciest. The Bulgari Hotel Tokyo blends Japanese and Italian influences across their hotel - from the very entrance of their 45th lobby, you’re greeted with a fusion of Western and Eastern elements. Located right next to Tokyo station, it’s simply a great starting point for those looking to shop at Ginza. It’s also home to several 3 star Michelin restaurants, if you’re ready to stomach the price!

If you’re not a shopper, then their spa and fitness will probably blow your mind. It’s on my radar in the future to check this out. Believe it or not, their floor is made from alluring sea foam mosaic tile and venetian glass, a nod to their Italian design elements. An elevator at the end of your hall goes directly to the spa. Not stop in the lobby, no running into anyone, it’s that private (and a first that I’ve heard of!). Their 40th floor pool radiates the luxurious feeling of green glass and sparkles of gold. If you want the most outrageous and luxurious feeling amenity possible, look no further than this hotel.

#9. Mesm Tokyo, Autograph Collection

Mesm Tokyo is a fantastic fusion of art, innovation and sustainability and is evident when you enter the hotel. Contemporary rooms, great dining and skyline views of Tokyo Bay are just some of the reasons why this hotel is so great.

Another recent addition to the Tokyo luxury hotels is the MESM Tokyo, Autograph Collection. Mesm Tokyo stands as an integral part of the revitalized Waters Takeshiba precinct, providing boutique lodging with harborside views in stunning facilities. Mesm is short for “mesmerize,” which is one way of describing the dazzling effect a luxury boutique hotel aims to achieve. The design is imaginative, especially in the public spaces, while the rooms are more sedate, though still impeccably styled. Some open onto views of the harbor, others the Hamarikyu Gardens.

When it comes to food, I think Mesm Tokyo has what it take to inspire foodies to visit - Chef’s Theatre promises haute Parisian cuisine, while Whisk offers an experience somewhere between a coffeehouse, a cocktail lounge, and a nightclub. Meanwhile, on the fourth floor, the Miyazaki Beef Restaurant offers Japanese steakhouse classics in chic surroundings, including an open-air terrace.

#8. Conrad Tokyo

This 5-star hotel cements Conrad’s presence in Tokyo as one of the premier luxury hotels in the city. It’s also one of the best redemptions possible in the Hilton Honors program.

The Conrad Tokyo represents one of the best value redemptions in the Hilton Honors hotel program, as this lavish hotel is located right in the middle of shopping, food and tourist attractions. Connected directly to the Shimbashi and Shiodome train stations, this makes for super easy access to transportation, and Ginza is simply right around the block. The breakfast here is fantastic and focuses a lot on quality, which shows during their presentation and extra menu selections.

Their Executive lounge is amazing for sight-seeing the views of Tokyo, while grabbing a relaxing cup of tea and high tea bites. The service is here of a kind and perhaps one of the best, as evident in my review of this hotel. They go beyond the 5-star service and really make sure you’re enjoying a great time at their hotel. It truly is one of the very best Hilton hotels in Japan and one I highly recommend to everyone.

#7. The Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho

IT is the 1st luxury collection hotel to open in tokyo back in 2016 and continues to be one of the luxury hotels in Marriott’s collection. It’s also one of the favorites amongst locals for a staycation.

This luxury hotel is a contemporary renovated hotel that easily captures your gaze when you’re driving closer to the hotel. Despite its heritage, as it opened in 1955, don’t think this is some old hotel. Its latest incorporation of modern hospitality mixed with Japanese customs makes this a fantastic hotel for those business or leisure traveling. As past of the Luxury Collection, I’d also highlight this hotel as a great redemption using Marriott points, or even Amex's Fine Hotels and Resort’s pgoram.

My wife and I had the opportunity to stay here in March and we came away incredibly relaxed and rested.

#6. Andaz Tokyo Toranomon Hills

Probably the best Andaz hotel in Asia, but also one of the trickiest to book on points during peak season. It’s still one of my top picks in the Hyatt portfolio, and with so many reasons.

The Andaz Tokyo continues to be one of the my favorite hotels in Tokyo. Back in 2016, I spent two nights with my family at the Andaz Tokyo and never looked back. The views are surreal and commands a beautiful vantage of Tokyo. Check-in is at a staggering 51st floor, where you’re greeted at the lounge with tea and champagne, rather than a conventional counter. Their fitness center and spa is fantastic and fits well with the open layout of the hotel. The hotel rooms are not large, but I swear the soaking tubs are some of the biggest I’ve ever seen!

Settled in Toranomon Hills, it’s an easy location for those traveling in and out of Tokyo, while enjoying the nearby restaurants and attractions - it’s a close walk to all the Imperial Palace, Ginza and the Tokyo Tower. Plus, as a Andaz, your mini bar and snacks are free - that’s always a win!

#5. Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo

This extravagant and opulent hotel deserves its place as one of the best hotels in Tokyo, and with a price tag to match. It’s service and stellar city views makes this one of the most sought after hotels in Japan.

Gaze into the sweeping city skyline of Tokyo and linger around with their legendary restaurants (12 of them, yes 12) curated from the finest chefs from all around the world. From Sushi Shin led by famed chef Miyakawa to traditional cantonese cuisine at Sense to the Tapas Molecular bar, it’s got everything you want to spoil yourself. This sensual 5-star hotel is designed to dazzle you no mater where you go in the hotel.

I’ve been here before to visit and the 38th lobby is probably one of the most breathtaking entrances I’ve witnessed. This 2 story sky lobby simply is an exclusive resort baked into the heart of Tokyo. Mandarin Oriental hotels are known for their fantastic room designs and product, and the Tokyo hotel is no exception. It’s also one of the very finest in showcasing 5-star hospitality - the staff is incredibly over the top and attentive to your every whim.

#4. The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo

This hotel simply oozes class and luxury. It’s the only hotel set in a neighborhood instead of a business district like its counterparts.

The Ritz-Carlton Tokyo is one of the most well-known luxury hotel in the city, alongside the Park Hyatt Tokyo. Despite its slightly dated appearance, make no mistake - this is still one of the best hotels in Tokyo, period. Its desirable location, classic luxury rooms and suites, fantastic dining and top-caliber service makes this s fantastic choice for those trying to redeem their Marriott Bonvoy points. The hospitality service in Japan is always top notch, but the staff at the Ritz-Carlton Tokyo is probably one of the very best in the world. No doubt, if they ever do a renovation down the road (like what the Park Hyatt Tokyo is undergoing), this would probably be one of the premier hotels in my book.

#3. The Peninsula Tokyo

Royalty and celebrities frequent this luxury hotel. The Peninsula Tokyo is a timeless centerpiece that is meant to serve at your every whim.

This luxury stalwart continues to impress luxury travelers from all over the world. This fantastic hotel features zen-like atmosphere and a stunning array of contemporary art and design. The Peninsula is famed not for their rooms or dining, but their outstanding service, which includes a Rolls Royce butler service that can bring guests around within a 1.2 mile radius, bicycles to visit the neighborhood, health club with indoor pool and outdoor terrace and much.

If you stayed at any Peninsula hotels, you would already know just how pampered one can get with their sublime service, and the Tokyo property is no different. Head to their spa for a 20-metre indoor pool and jacuzzi overlooking the Imperial Palace gardens, or find yourself dining at some of the very best restaurants in Tokyo.

#2. Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi

The Four Seasons Otemachi has reestablished itself as one of the major luxury brands to be reckoned with when choosing the best hotels in Tokyo, and rightfully so.

The Four Seasons has always had a commanding presence in Tokyo, and now with this recent opening of the Four Seasons Hotel at Otemachi, this is a strong contender to being one of the best luxury hotels in the world. Perched near the edge of the Imperial Palace, this under-the-radar design oozes luxury and drama when you arrive on the 39th floor lobby. The views are impressive but when you’re booked with a room that faces the west, you’re overlooking what is considered the best views of Tokyo in the world. Designed by Aman veteran Jean-Michel Gathy, you know the rooms and suites are going to be incredibly tasteful and mesmerizing.

What’s crazy about this hotel - it only has 57 rooms, which could easily make it luxury boutique resort. Thus, you’re getting personalized and private service.

#1. Aman Tokyo

When money’s not an issue and you want the best of the best. The Aman Tokyo commands the ultimate tier of travelers and sets the bar for all things related to hospitality.

The Aman Resorts are among the most prestigious and jaw-dropping hotels in the world and rises above all its competitors with his uncompromising luxury and unbeatable service. The Aman Tokyo places its crown in the Otemachi Tower with unobstructed views of the imperial garden and the vast city landscapes of the Tokyo skyline. Everything about this hotel screams absolute luxury. From a lobby bedecked in basalt stone that resembles the inside of a washi paper lantern to zen-like gardens and a water feature with seasonal ikebana flower arrangements, this exclusive 84 room hotel spares no expense in elevating your stay to the highest level possible.

If you have the money, you can also try their Aman-led excursions in Tokyo, where you can meet legendary artisans running generational businesses of kimono, tea and chopsticks. That is, if you’re willing to shell out $2,000/night at this hotel (and that’s just the starting price, haha) Ultimately, this is the finale and the king of the mountain for Tokyo.
