Hotel Review: Carneros Resort and Spa

Introduction

This is one of my absolute favorite hotels in Napa Valley.

The Carneros Resort and Spa deviates itself from typical Napa Valley luxury hotels through its unique "luxury farmhouse" concept. This concept has proved to be rather successful, as the Stanly Ranch, Auberge Resorts Collection, an even more luxurious resort than Carneros, has replicated the same concept a few miles down.

Rather than a single building, the resort spans 28 acres with individual cottages arranged in intimate neighborhoods, connected by garden paths and working farmland. This vast property integrates agricultural elements throughout – from the working culinary gardens that supply the restaurants to apple orchards and olive groves that dot the landscape. The architecture draws inspiration from the region's farming heritage, featuring contemporary interpretations of traditional barn structures and farmhouses.

Carneros Resort and Spa emphasizes indoor-outdoor living with private cottage gardens, shared spaces with fire pits, and communal gathering areas that encourage guests to experience the natural environment. The property's elevation provides gorgeous views of Napa Valley, and with a vast ground of beautiful cottages, amenities and restaurants scattered across, this is a highly recommended resort for couples and families alike.

Resort Grounds

The resort's 28-acre property is a masterpiece of landscape design. Meandering pathways connect cottages through gardens filled with lavender, rosemary, and native California plants. The adult-only infinity pool, perched at the property's highest point, offers breathtaking views of the Napa Valley. Kitchen gardens supply the restaurants with fresh herbs and vegetables, while apple orchards and olive groves dot the grounds.

The resort maintains several edible gardens, demonstrating sustainable farming practices while providing fresh ingredients for its restaurants. Walking paths weave through these productive landscapes, offering guests an immersive experience in wine country's agricultural heritage. The layout creates distinct zones for different experiences – adult-only areas for tranquility, family-friendly spaces for activities, and quiet corners for those morning reflection walks. This thoughtful organization sets it apart from traditional hotel properties where all amenities are typically centralized in one building, or close by.

Throughout the grounds, thoughtfully placed recreation areas invite guests to embrace outdoor living. The resort features professional-grade bocce courts surrounded by comfortable seating and fire pits – perfect for evening tournaments with a glass of wine. Multiple outdoor fireplaces and lounging areas are scattered across the property, creating intimate spaces for conversation or quiet reflection.

The resort's design prioritizes privacy and connection to nature, with buildings and pathways carefully positioned to maximize views while maintaining intimate spaces. This arrangement creates a village-like atmosphere that distinguishes it from the more conventional hotel tower or villa configurations common in Napa Valley.

Throughout the property, intimate seating areas with fire pits provide perfect spots for evening relaxation. The resort's location in Carneros, straddling both Napa and Sonoma counties, makes it an ideal base for wine tasting adventures. The property's natural elements – from the heritage oak trees to the working gardens – create an atmosphere of refined agricultural luxury that perfectly captures the essence of Wine Country living.

The state-of-the-art fitness center offers both indoor and outdoor workout spaces. The indoor facility features Peloton bikes, treadmills, and strength training equipment, while the outdoor area provides space for yoga and meditation sessions. Complimentary fitness classes are offered daily, ranging from morning yoga to high-intensity interval training.

Premier Garden Cottage King

During check-in, we were upgraded to the Premier Garden Cottage King under the Lavender section of the resort. My parents were room #2, and we were room #1.

When approaching our cottage entrance, we could tell this was going to be a fun and memorable night for us all. The 42sqm cottage featured floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors that opened to a secluded garden with a fire pit and outdoor shower – perfect for stargazing with a glass of local wine, or in our case, a lavish korean BBQ and ramen party at night.

The Premier Garden Cottage King offers a masterful blend of indoor and outdoor living spaces, starting with the private gated entrance that opens to your personal garden oasis. This secluded outdoor space features comfortable lounge furniture, perfect for morning coffee or evening relaxation. The outdoor patio showcases a custom-designed gas fire pit surrounded by Adirondack chairs, creating an intimate setting for evening wine tasting or stargazing. The private outdoor shower, enclosed for privacy yet open to the sky, adds a touch of luxury with its rainfall showerhead and natural stone flooring.

In addition, the cottage's outdoor space includes a dining table for two, ideal for enjoying in-room dining or a casual breakfast. Mature landscaping, including lavender and native California plants, ensures privacy while maintaining the natural beauty of the Napa Valley setting. While it was unfortunate that it was cloudy during our stay, I bet this place would be gorgeous during a beautiful spring and fall day in Napa.

Inside, the cottage's modern farmhouse design incorporates floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors that fully open to create a seamless indoor-outdoor experience. These doors feature manual-controlled blinds for privacy and a digital temperature control. The heated bathroom floors extend from the interior to the covered portion of the patio, creating visual continuity between spaces. Internet speeds were blazing, as you can see below with the shared speedtest.

The bedroom area features a custom-designed platform king bed positioned to take advantage of both the fireplace view and the garden vista. The sitting area includes two leather armchairs and a side table, perfect for enjoying the fireplace. The massive bathroom is a welcoming addition, though showing a bit of age. The oversized soaking tub sits beneath a beautiful window overlooking the private garden, while the indoor shower features a two shower outlets, one a handheld shower option. The double vanity area includes built-in lighting, heated mirrors to prevent fogging, and ample counter space. The heated floor is such a blessing during those cold mornings.

Amenities

For those seeking active pursuits, the resort thoughtfully provides complimentary cruiser bikes for leisurely exploration of the expansive property and the nearby wineries that dot the landscape. Meandering walking paths gracefully wind through the resort's beautifully designed gardens and bountiful orchards, offering inviting opportunities for refreshing morning strolls or serene evening walks. In addition, the garden game areas feature oversized chess sets and corn-hole boards, adding delightful and playful touches to the sophisticated and elegant setting.

The Market

The Market at Carneros Resort serves as a charming gourmet provisions shop conveniently located near the resort's entrance. This well-curated store offers a delightful selection of carefully sourced local wines, artisanal cheeses, delicious charcuterie, and fresh-baked goods that delight the senses. Guests can also find specialty picnic supplies, such as locally made preserves, artisanal honey, exquisite olive oils, and wine country-inspired gifts that are perfect for taking home. The Market additionally provides convenient grab-and-go breakfast items, scrumptious sandwiches, and freshly prepared salads available daily, making them ideal for impromptu picnics on the gorgeous resort grounds.

The Edible Garden

Regarding the garden areas, Carneros Resort maintains extensive culinary gardens that diligently supply their celebrated restaurants with an array of fresh produce and fragrant herbs. These working gardens not only showcase sustainable farming practices but also highlight seasonal crops that are typical of the fertile Napa Valley region. Walking paths thoughtfully wind through these planted areas, allowing guests to observe the growing process and the seasonal changes that accompany nature's rhythms. The resort's culinary gardens serve a dual purpose, acting as both a functional growing space and an engaging educational opportunity for guests. These carefully tended plots provide the resort's renowned restaurants with a steady supply of fresh herbs, vibrant vegetables, and delicate edible flowers. The gardens adhere to seasonal growing patterns typical of the Napa Valley region, with hearty winter greens gracefully giving way to sun-ripened summer tomatoes and fragrant herbs come harvest time.

The resort's recreational spaces have been thoughtfully integrated into the natural landscape. The bocce courts, finished with crushed oyster shells in the traditional Italian style, are surrounded by comfortable seating areas and fire pits. These courts offer a classic Wine Country pastime, particularly enjoyable during the golden hour before sunset.

The two infinity pools represent different experiences: the adult-only Hilltop Pool provides a serene retreat with panoramic valley views, while the family-friendly Otto's Pool offers a more lively atmosphere with its separate children's pool and hot tub. Both pool areas feature private cabanas, full food and beverage service, and plenty of chaise lounges for relaxation.

The fitness center combines indoor and outdoor workout spaces, reflecting the resort's indoor-outdoor lifestyle. The indoor facility houses state-of-the-art cardio and strength training equipment, while the outdoor space accommodates yoga sessions and other fitness classes. The center's design includes large windows that maintain a connection to the surrounding landscape even during indoor workouts.

The Spa at Carneros embodies wine country wellness with its extensive treatment menu. The 6,000-square-foot facility features nine treatment rooms, including couples' suites with private gardens. Signature treatments incorporate local ingredients like grape seed extract, honey, and olive oil. The spa's relaxation areas include steam rooms, saunas, and a sophisticated relaxation lounge serving herbal teas and infused water.

Working gardens, orchards, and thoughtfully designed pathways connect individual cottages, creating an environment that feels both intimate and expansive. This arrangement allows guests to feel deeply connected to Napa Valley's agricultural heritage while enjoying world-class amenities.

Even More amenities

The Living Room at Carneros Resort serves as the property's central gathering space, designed to evoke the feeling of an elegant wine country estate. This welcoming space features soaring ceilings with exposed wooden beams, complemented by floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the room with natural light. Comfortable seating arrangements include plush sofas and leather armchairs clustered around limestone fireplaces, creating intimate conversation areas.

Adjacent to the Living Room, the Library provides a quieter retreat. This thoughtfully curated space houses an extensive collection of books focusing on wine, local history, and California cuisine. Rich wooden shelving lines the walls, while leather reading chairs and ambient lighting create an atmosphere perfect for afternoon reading or quiet contemplation. The Library also features a selection of board games and a curated collection of regional wines available for tasting.

Hilltop Pool

The adults-only Hilltop Pool stands as one of the resort's most striking and impressive features. Positioned at the property's highest elevation, this stunning infinity-edge pool appears to seamlessly merge with the breathtaking horizon, offering guests panoramic views of the lush Napa Valley vineyards and the distant, majestic mountains. The pool area boasts private cabanas that are thoughtfully equipped with comfortable loungers, side tables, and convenient call buttons for attentive poolside service. The temperature-controlled pool allows for enjoyable year-round swimming, while the adjacent hot tub provides a perfect vantage point for savoring the beauty of sunset viewing. The pool deck features premium chaise lounges adorned with plush cushions and generous oversized umbrellas for ample shade.

A dedicated pool bar serves handcrafted cocktails, local wines, and a carefully curated menu of light fare that enhances the experience. The sophisticated sound system plays subtle background music, creating an atmosphere of refined relaxation where guests can unwind and enjoy their surroundings.

Vineyard Lawn

The Vineyard Lawn serves as both a serene relaxation space and an elegant event venue. This manicured green space offers unobstructed views of the surrounding vineyards, making it a popular spot for morning yoga sessions and afternoon picnics. The lawn is bordered by mature olive trees and native landscaping, creating a natural framework for the valley views beyond.

For events, the Vineyard Lawn transforms into an sophisticated outdoor venue. The space can accommodate everything from intimate gatherings to larger celebrations, with the vineyard backdrop providing a quintessential wine country setting. Permanent landscape lighting illuminates the space in the evening, while the adjacent covered pavilion offers protection from the elements.

Breakfast

The Hilltop Dining Room occupies a privileged position at the resort's highest point, offering guests a remarkable dining venue where floor-to-ceiling windows frame panoramic views of the Napa Valley vineyards, rolling hills, and distant mountains. The architectural design thoughtfully incorporates natural materials like reclaimed wood and stone, creating an atmosphere that feels both sophisticated and welcoming.

The complimentary breakfast service is only available exclusively to resort guests. For those that prefer something more fancy or hearty, check out the Boon Fly cafe or FARM, which are both on the resort grounds.

The breakfast menu showcases the agricultural bounty of the region through both classic and innovative dishes. The culinary team sources many ingredients from the resort's own culinary gardens and local producers, ensuring exceptional freshness and flavor. For health-conscious guests, the menu includes thoughtfully crafted options such as steel-cut oatmeal garnished with local honey and seasonal berries. House-made granola paired with organic Straus Family Creamery yogurt offers another light yet satisfying option.

The service style strikes a perfect balance between attentiveness and discretion, allowing guests to enjoy their morning meal at their own pace. The breakfast service typically extends into mid-morning, accommodating both early risers and those who prefer a leisurely start to their day.
