Introduction

Starlux Airlines, a premium airline based in Taiwan, has set its sights on joining the Oneworld alliance. This move holds significant potential for both the airline and its passengers. Let's explore how Starlux Airlines would benefit from becoming a member of the Oneworld alliance.

The Oneworld alliance is the natural advantage for Starlux, given the competitive landscape in Taiwan — China Airlines belongs to SkyTeam, and EVA Air belongs to Star Alliance. There’s absolutely no way either of those alliances would have two airlines from Taiwan, so it makes sense that Taiwan’s third full service airline would join the third alliance (the one I would much prefer).

Why Oneworld?

Joining Oneworld would drastically expand Starlux Airlines' global footprint. Currently, Starlux operates primarily within Asia, with ambitions to extend its routes to North America and beyond. As a member of Oneworld, Starlux could offer its passengers seamless connectivity to over 1,000 destinations across 170 countries. This extensive network is made possible through codeshare agreements and partnerships with other alliance members, such as American Airlines, British Airways, and Cathay Pacific. Utilizing AA and Alaska miles here to Asia would be a dream here.

Starlux AIrlines is one of my favorite airlines right now, given its amazing A350-900 business class and the superb service that Starlux Airlines prides themselves with. My flight review from SFO to TPE showcased how they’ve begun moving upwards in the premium class against the heavyweights of Singapore AIrlines, Emirates, Qatar, ANA and Japan Airlines.

Award Travel Opportunities

One of the most appealing aspects of Starlux Airlines joining Oneworld is the increased flexibility and opportunities for earning and redeeming frequent flyer miles. Starlux’s Cosmile loyalty program members would gain access to a broader network of airlines for both earning and redeeming miles. Here’s my thoughts on how this could specifically benefit both award and frequent Asia travelers:

Using Miles on Oneworld Partners:

American Airlines: As a Oneworld member, Starlux passengers could use their Cosmile miles to book flights on American Airlines, opening up a vast array of destinations, especially within the Americas. This is particularly advantageous for travelers looking to fly between Asia and North America, as American Airlines has an extensive network of routes covering both continents. I can imagine utilizing 60-70K miles on AA to fly from SFO to TPE, where the value would be incredibly valuable.
Alaska Airlines: Although Alaska Airlines is not a Oneworld member, it maintains close partnerships with Oneworld airlines, allowing for seamless integration and benefits. Starlux passengers could potentially use their miles to book flights on Alaska Airlines, further enhancing connectivity within North America and to destinations like Hawaii and Mexico. In fact, our flight to Taiwan this year on Starlux Airlines was based on the 75K award miles on Alaska airlines!

Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines: Starlux passengers would be able to use their miles to book award travel on these premier Asian carriers, offering extensive coverage across Asia, including key destinations in Japan, China, and Southeast Asia. This creates more options for intra-Asia travel, providing flexibility and convenience for frequent flyers. I’m not sure how the award redemptions would work on intra-Asia trips, but I would utilize Alaska Airline’s latest mileage program updates to book these flights.

One of the key advantages for Starlux Airlines passengers would be the improved travel experience that comes with Oneworld membership. Frequent flyers of Starlux would gain access to Oneworld's elite tier benefits, which include priority boarding, access to over 650 premium lounges worldwide, extra baggage allowance, and expedited security and immigration processing. Additionally, the integration of loyalty programs allows passengers to earn and redeem miles across all Oneworld member airlines, significantly enhancing the value of Starlux's Cosmile loyalty program. In summary:
